L3nee's Lay-Up (pronounced La Nay) is a unique barndominium style shipping container home featuring a half court covered indoor/outdoor basketball hoop.
This home also features 2 shipping containers with 2 private bedrooms (Queen size) and 2 private bathrooms with showers. Full kitchen and the family room with a gas fireplace. Covered outdoor dining space, hot tub, 2 swings, and fire pit.
L3nee’s Lay-up got its name for owners daughter who played basketball since she could walk. Her number as a young player was #3. She went on to play college basketball and still plays today even in her 30’s. Basketball has been a big part of their lives. Owners love the game and wanted to share this beautiful shipping container home with others who feel the same.

About Barndominium
A barndominium, or "barndo" for short, is a structure resembling a barn—often built using metal poles, post-frame methods, shipping containers, or similar barn-like designs with metal siding—that has been partially or entirely turned into a livable space. These structures may be fully converted into residential homes or only partially modified, where one section serves as a living area and the rest functions as a workshop, garage, storage area, or even housing for animals. Some barndominiums serve a dual purpose, functioning as both a residence and a place of business. A similar hybrid design is the “shouse,” which combines a shop and a house.
The word "barndominium" was originally introduced by Karl Nilsen, a real estate developer from Connecticut. It blends the terms “barn” and “condominium.” Initially, the term described a planned community centered around equestrian lifestyles. However, in the mid-2000s, the meaning evolved to refer to metal-framed homes used as primary residences. The concept gained significant popularity after Chip and Joanna Gaines featured a metal home as a "barndominium" on their HGTV show Fixer Upper in 2016, helping to redefine the term as referring to stylish metal homes—not just those associated with horse barns.
According to Google Trends, interest in barndominiums has continued to rise, especially following their appearance on HGTV, with a notable increase around 2020. These days, the term “barndominium” is used more broadly and isn’t strictly tied to the type of framing—whether metal or traditional post-frame construction. Much like architectural categories such as modern, colonial, or craftsman, barndominiums have become a recognized style of home design.
Thanks to their spacious, open layouts, barndominiums offer a high degree of customization. They can be built as single-story or two-story homes. In the U.S., various companies offer customizable barndominium kits that can be adapted to meet local building codes and environmental considerations, such as earthquake risk, snow loads, or fire safety.
Cost Considerations
Compared to conventional homes, barndominiums and shipping container barndominiums often have lower total construction costs, particularly when it comes to labor and building time—even if materials themselves might be more expensive. States like West Virginia, Alabama, and Mississippi report some of the lowest costs, with construction expenses falling below $100 per square foot.
However, total costs can vary significantly based on insulation needs, which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The DOE assigns specific R-values for insulation depending on the region’s climate zone, which can affect the overall price based on location.
Financing a barndominium can be more complex than for a traditional home, as lenders may find it difficult to accurately appraise these unconventional properties.
