The Kaloorup Shipping Container House is a project that Steve Hick is undertaking in the south west of Western Australia. Nine 40ft containers are being used for the structure. Recycling where possible using native hardwoods (Jarrah) for cladding and decking.  The cladding and darker tones are being used to help the house blend in with the surrounding bushland. Large double glazed glass panels are being used where possible to retain warmth through the cooler months and secondary colourbond roofing to act as a second skin protecting the inhabitants from unwanted heat transfer in summer. The project is the first legal container house structure in the southern capes Margaret River area and is close to completion.




Interview with the architect

What did the client ask you for?

Friends of mine had a rural block in the Margaret River region. They wanted to put a more substantial home on the block using sea containers. I thought it was a great opportunity to do something creative that achieved their goals but could be something really special and beautiful to be a part of.

So we widened our thinking to consider a master plan, including channelling the natural springwater into a dam and planning future chalets in the surrounding bushland.

How does this sit within your overall view architecture and life?

I really feel that a building has to fit, not only into its surroundings but also to suit the nature of its owners. The owner of this property is a fairly handy guy with access to friends who had more specialised skills, as well as a whole lot of recycled materials. Things like reclaimed local Jarrah, double glazed window units, cladding etc. We wanted to put these resources and talents to good use so the palette of materials and building methodology evolved from what was immediately available.

How did you make the containers work for this build?

The logical structure would just be to place one container on top of the other, but we wanted to do something literally outside of that box. Right from the start I saw an opportunity to spread out on a site to create a sculptural building sat in a broader, natural context not contained within traditional suburban boundaries. So each container is articulated to stand partly alone, rather than as a stacked piece. They make great building blocks and with some modifications can accommodate any room. Spaces are also created between the containers and areas of the house slot into and around them.

Downstairs there are 2 dorms, upstairs the open plan living area leads to a huge elevated timber deck overlooking the dam. Linked off these spaces are 2 similar master pods with robes, bedrooms, master ensuite.

The containers are still identifiable in their original form. Why is that?

I never wanted to fully subvert the containers, I wanted to express them in some way so as to retain a trace of their original purpose. While the upstairs is clad in beautiful materials, downstairs you can still see the sea containers which pay homage to their origin. The front doors are actually the sea container doors which can lock up the whole place.

What were some of the challenges you faced in the design and build process?

There is a certain limitation that unaltered sea containers have based on their dimensions. We had to re-think how these worked in the context of a home. The modular nature forces you to get creative about how larger areas will work. Configuration and the linking of spaces that are atypical allowed new ideas to emerge. One of these is the cantilevered upper level of containers. This adds to the architecture rather than constraining it.

The structure was built by the owner rather than engaging a builder. This is sometimes a challenge in maintaining the integrity of the intended design, but although he didn't have a building background his passion and determination to take something potentially mundane and make the extraordinary was amazing. He got his hands dirty! But his meticulous execution and ability to stay true to the original vision has brought the design to life.

How do you feel about the resulting home?

I'm really pleased. It's an amazing showcase of a varied skills and like-minds coming together. The architectural design creates excitement and anticipation as you glimpse it through the bush-land on approach, where it sits like an elegant Ark in the landscape. From the minute a guest gets their first look, the desire to explore and see what's around each corner reveals so many unexpected vistas and surprises.

Do you think we will see more such homes in the future?

This type of design has a lot of potential. For a start you are reusing existing materials. They can be reused over and over again. Interest is increasing due to the practicality, low structural cost. They are capable of becoming well-insulated units with the right treatment. All the windows are double glazed. Speed of the build is another great benefit, the containers were craned into place all in one day. Obliviously fit-out took a lot longer. But it means that you could potentially create very affordable housing in a suburban context.

This project is the first new build office to be approved with shipping containers construction within a Conservation area in central London. The containers are sprayed hues of red and yellow to match the original glazed bricks of the surrounding Listed Buildings.

Simon Astridge (on the project): "I want my clients to walk into a space and not be able to keep their hands in their pockets. I want them to touch the different hues, textures and colours of the tiled products. I want them to run their fingers over the walls and the floor. The porcelain gallery project allowed us to achieve our goals of sensorial architecture. Attention was paid to encompassing the rich history of Hatton Garden within the design, with the use of shipping containers representing the industrial heritage through to smaller details such as the antique light fittings and custom display cabinets designed to mimic and communicate the significance of the jewellery workshops still prevalent in the area.





The project is rooted within its context by orientating towards a mature locust tree and with the colours of the shipping containers taken from the surrounding grade listed buildings and classical red and yellow hues of London brick. Our celebratory concept for everything the visitor touches to be clay starts as soon as they enter the gallery with the gentle touch of the ceramic buzzer, this concept extends throughout the project with everything from the extruded stair handrail to the slender door handles being made from 100% natural clay. We meticulously designed all the pieces and their unique glazes with our ceramicist Emma Louise Payne."

Urban Rigger is a unique, design protected, patented, floating, flexible, CO2 neutral and mobile property totaling 680 , which is spread over 300  of housing (9 + 3 individual student residence a respectively. 23  – 27 ), a 160  common green courtyard, Kayak landing, Bathing platform, BBQ area, as well as 65  communal roof terrace. Downstairs below sea level, the 230  pontoon (basement), Comprising: 12 storage rooms, technical room and common fully automated laundry.

Designers utilize up-cycled shipping containers to create floating shipping container home.

Shipping container is probably the most optimised infrastructure on the planet. The container system is a uniform system that is used in every continent. Shipping containers are accessible everywhere. The problem arises when shipping container reaches the end of its lifecycle. Depending on global steel prices, shipping containers are either abandoned or melted down. If shipping container is melted down, it will have consumed 8.5 megawatt in its life cycle. So instead of recycling, we are banking on up cycling. In other words, continuing the container’s life cycle in a different way. It costs as little as 450 kilowatts and it does away with the approximately 1,100 tonnes of CO2 required to build a new, traditional home. By revitalizing these old structures we help to maintain a low environmental impact of Urban Riggers.

Sustainable Materials Approach

We want to do our best to preserve our natural capital. The material lifecycle perspective is considered in all our constructions, inside as well as outside. Healthy materials are chosen to create a good indoor climate. Our partners and their technologies are playing a key role in generating heating and cooling, while ensuring internal climate comfort and keeping energy use to a minimum. Instead of using traditional, bulky insulation materials, we are using at aerogel, which was developed for space travel and Aluthermo reflective insulation. It is a form of insulation consisting of thin aluminium foil made from recycled aluminium derived from beer and soda cans, for example.

Sustainable Lifestyle Lab established by the Sustainable Design Institute of Arts and Science research center, Tsinghua University and Participatory Community Development Center. The sustainable modular container house with roof terrace and garden for rooftop organic farming composed of six containers, which applied low-carbon, healthy and green philosophy to real life, so as to let more people to understand and participate in it.

Material

Due to some restrictions, the construction time frame must be very short, and the house design should be efficient and recyclable. So the design team chose modular container house with roof terrace and garden for rooftop organic farming. The box structure, windows, doors, roofs, walls and floors are prefabricated in the factory.

Space and Function

The house composed of six containers (6055mm*2435mm*2790mm), using ‘modular design’ idea: Each box inside is a standard space unit with different functions. Different combination patterns form various function space. The container house includes three bedrooms, exhibition space, a storage room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The entrance container is located at an angle of 90 degrees to other five containers, forming a courtyard.

Environmental Friendliness

The production cost of this sustainable modular container house with roof terrace and garden for rooftop organic farming, is low, and the container is energy saving, low-carbon and reusable. It can be transported conveniently and the transportation cost is very low. The container house construction process is easy, quick, and resource-saving, with less noise and dust pollution.




Eco-circle system includes:

  • sewage collection, treatment, re-use: the reclaimed water system;
  • kitchen waste, excreta collection, treatment, re-use: biogas digester;

Building a house was pretty much the same for centuries but now there's a material that's totally changing the game: shipping containers. They're cheap, abundant and almost indestructible and they're revolutionising the way homes are being designed and built. Shipping container building is a movement that's taking the construction world by storm with a little creativity and vision you can create some truly stunning homes.




Marketing manager Miranda has been renting near Tampa for ten years.

"I'm from Detroit Michigan I moved down here when I was for my first marketing job I just love it so much I would never never move back to the cold. I'm definitely a Florida girl now I'm in sales and marketing and I really need a place where I can work from home. It's gonna be a huge help in my productivity it's gonna save me so much time and I don't have to pay for renting my own office."


Miranda wanted a cost-effective contemporary space.

"I've been looking for modern industrial kind of home for a while. I really started feeling like I wanted this when I saw this container bar that was built in Tampa it was so cool and I wanted something similar. My budget for building my shipping container home in Florida is about two hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

Miranda has hired local contractors who specialized in container homes to help realize the vision. Shipping containers are really one of the best building units that you can have. Florida has wind storm conditions with hurricanes and these containers are super strong. It's a sustainable product. There's millions of these that come into Florida ports every year that aren't being utilized.


Miranda's shipping container home in Florida features seven containers, 2,000 square feet area and 30 foot vertical tower serves as the entrance to the ground floor opening to a square foot office workspace. The second floor features two bedrooms, kitchen, dining area and second bathroom.

All constructions built watertight because in Florida any time that you leave steel exposed it's going to rust very quickly. There's a lot of salt in the air and there's a lot of moisture in the air. All the rust areas were putting on acid base and then priming them as quick as possible for paint work very quickly.

The exterior has retained the industrial level with wood accents and large windows. The front entrance leads to a large office base for Miranda's home business. Clean minimalist design and contemporary prints mixed with exposed metal. This is a cool space for Miranda to meet clients. Next space is just kind of relaxing when you're having a stressful day then just take a little break. Chic wooden stairs lead to Miranda's main living space. Open floor plan living room features exposed metal ceilings and accent walls. Bright breakfast nook sits alongside a modern kitchen with custom concrete countertop. Miranda's bedroom is light and airy. Second bedroom has been turned into a den for Miranda's dog Buddy. At the back of the house is an outdoor balcony for Miranda to soak up the Florida sun.

When Paula Dowd and family decided to build a new shipping container duplex house on their property in South Redondo they wanted to do more than just build a home. They wanted to create something that represented the change they wished to see in the world.

For the Dowd's, that change meant deciding to build with an alternative to wood-framed construction. So they went with shipping containers.

The shipping container duplex house, in the 200 block of South Lucia Avenue, consists of 14 used containers as the main structural component. Each container, purchased from a company in the Port of Los Angeles, was welded together with holes carved out precisely for windows and doors.

Dowd's home — which has been nicknamed the Lucia Container Home and is actually two homes on one 6,000 square-foot lot.

Each home, at 2,100 square feet and 2,300 square feet respectively, has three bedrooms and two and a half baths. The back house also have an office.

The cedar tree plays a very important role for the space of this beautiful shipping container home, so that there is a visual contact to the tree from any point of the house. In addition, the shape of the house designed with harmony to climate elements of the surrounding place: double height central space acts as a lung with natural cross ventilation, and the glass facade provides natural lighting.

For the least possible environmental impact the architects took in account several considerations, in energy conservation system, as well as in materials and design. For example in the process of the choice of the building materials, main factors were their reusable, renewable, and recyclable qualities in addition to maintainability and durability. In furniture details, cedar tree wood was used as well as in the stairs. The deck was designed of certified wood from renewable sources mixed with bamboo, concrete floors and recycled plastic, among others. Also, the house water supply system has rainwater collection for irrigation and toilets. The hot water is solar-heated. Electricity can be provided with solar panels. For most doors in the container house,container doors were reused. Natural cross ventilation is enough for the house space so that the container home does not require additional air conditioning, and natural sunlighting makes virtually no necessary electric lights during the day.





The use of shipping containers in the design gives a rich contrast to the construction, in addition to significally reducing the environmental impact of this beautiful shipping container home, which means the reuse of an already existing building element for the construction, generating less CO2 emissions in athmosphere than the cement production for traditional houses and transportation to building site from trucking all those traditional materials, this without mentioning a less invasive earthworks. It is estimated that the total cost is reduced by 20% and the construction time about 20%.

The home area must also be used as a workplace for the owner, a professional photographer, who needs open spaces with a sufficient amount of light; a space that coincides with the ‘work and play’ philosophy while aiding creativity. a central 95m² area that can be used both for professional and personal purposes was formed by interconnecting and superposing containers. ‘The house dresses and undresses according to what you want to use it for,’ explains the architect, ‘be it a living room, an audiovisual space, a photographic or advertising studio.’

Pocket House - 30 sqm House Inside Shipping Container, Brazil






Designed by Cristina Menezes, the Pocket House transforms a 40-foot shipping container into a fully functional 30-square-meter residence. Located in Belo Horizonte, the project emphasizes mobility, sustainability, and efficient use of space. Large sliding glass doors, a flexible outdoor deck, movable furnishings, and extensive natural lighting help the compact home feel open and comfortable while maintaining the ability to be relocated when needed.

Brazil company Cristina Menezes Arquitetura e Decoracao created a 30 sqm house inside shipping container, "Pocket House". The project includes an architecture with the principles of mobility and sustainability. The existing civil work was the base for the shipping container. The rest of the work was only installation. In fact, this part of construction was very important, because the container should have the ability to be transported at any time to any place, without any inconvenience. Only furniture and decor elements will be transported separately. The measurements of the shipping container are standardized, and the container of the Pocket House is the 40-foot shipping container that is 12.20m x 2.44m, externally. Internally, after the installation of the structure with flooring and interior finish, the final measurements were 11.80m x 2.34m. Due to the small width, the first change we made to visually minimize this narrowing was to cut the long side to fit glass sliding doors. So we can have an amplitude and an integration with the external area! These large glass doors assist in ventilation and natural lighting. Steel side of the container was used as a deck structure that we created to have an extension of social space and a place for leisure activities. All the furniture is easy to move allowing you to use the deck as an extension of the living room and kitchen. The kitchen equipment is movable and electric and you can use it on the deck. For this purpose the outlet points for water and sewer were created on the deck.

For walls, ceiling and floor only one material was used: Ipe wood. Thus, we don't have the color and texture separation of what is floor, wall and ceiling and sense of amplitude increases. The bathroom walls are made of glass for lighter weight and less space. A translucent printing on the glass provides privacy between the living room and the bathroom. LED lighting enhances this interior design. For the acoustic insulation, we use a specific paint for this purpose on the steel side walls of the container.

This project allows you to have a 30 sqm house inside shipping container with kitchen, dining table, living room, bedroom and bathroom. This is sustainability! This is a new and current concept of living!

Container Spaces works with recycling materials and has an architectural approach to the re-use of ISO shipping containers as a base element for construction of modular spaces for housing and commercial use, taking advantage of its characteristics of strength, mobility and adaptability, plus count the cost-benefit aspect.

Shipping containers padel sport club


For a shipping containers padel sport club (its a mix between tennis and squash) the Living Project Homes used 4 x 40ft HC containers, inside the containers they built a woodframe with insulation. The client wanted an eco look, the walls from the OSB3 board and the roof from OSB3 with a PVC folie wrap around for the color.

The movable container construction allows the client to have a permit for 2 years on this place, that's why he chose containers so over 2 years he can take all the containers and place them somewhere else.

The building time of this project was 4 weeks, and the time for placing, connecting and finishing on location was around one week.

Pall Mall Hostel is no area to sleep; instead it is a space for having fun.

Artdepartment Berlin in collaboration with Fleck Promotion and Geometry Global agencies created concept of the Pall Mall Hostel. They offered a new view at dimension for promotional activities of Pall Mall at different music festivals. As the container hostel should be delivered at the events, which took places throughout Germany, the construction was made in a manner to obtain the certification from the TÜV (English: Technical Inspection Association, German: Technischer Überwachungs-Verein) and to be a space for more than 500 festival visitors.




This is the biggest container building that fulfilled all the criteria of the TÜV permit procedure successfully. At the ground floor there is a reception, where the guests can be registered and can receive promotional give-aways. The Event Container Building offers the superior convenience, there is a lounge, double sided bar and visitors can use Wi-Fi. Also there is a backstage area, the place where the bands retreat, in the annex. The technical storage container is used for successful operating of the engineering systems of the Event Container Building.

The Pall Mall Club is situated in the first floor; it has professional light and sound systems and its own bar. Through the ample glass wall amazing view over festival ground is presented. “To see and to be seen” is the motto in this place. On the terrace there is a stage, which is constructed from container decks. Absolutely everything from different sides is seen from this centerpiece of the outdoor space. It is possible to build one more terrace on the second floor that will allow an unusual view over the Pall Mall stage and the whole festival grounds.

The hostel’s furniture, reception and bar are made of recycling building materials, because the hostel follows the recycling concept like most container constructions. Doors, windows and wood pallets are taken from old buildings. Among the main features there are the barrel furniture. Contemporary atmosphere is created by combination of the surfaces and high-end padding materials.

In August 2014 the Pall Mall Hostel was successfully presented at Rock‘nHeim Festival. The building has delightful view to the main stage both from the decks and the VIP lounge, where the organizers invite their guests.

The event container Booth Plus at new festival ground impressed the guests in Mendig in 2015. The party on three levels of Event Container Building lasted three days. For allowing the best view over the Volcano Stage and whole festival ground a rooftop terrace was created.

Brenda Kelly made her old dream come true, she was dreaming about tiny house since she was at age of 13. And she got it; Brenda lives in a 100 sq ft house - small and cozy off-grid shipping container home.

For following the regulations of local zoning in Auckland (New Zealand) concerning area, there is a covered outdoor porch space, which keeps the structure at 100 square feet (10 square meters).

Layout decision and design of the interior will amaze you from the first sight. There are kitchen, a bedroom with a wardrobe, spacious bathroom and even home office space though the limited square feet.

The concrete blocks were used for foundation of the 100 sq ft house. Also the container house is equipped with two solar panels and there is a rainwater collection system.
