A first for Bow Valley housing is being regarded as an affordable option within pricey mountain communities.

As six sea can containers were lowered onto screw piles and locked into place this past February on a lot in Exshaw, there was curiosity as to what was springing up in the Municipal District of Bighorn hamlet

The modular home, after all, is the first of its kind in the Bow Valley.

A single sea can, or shipping container, is a closed cell, high cube, steel structure of eight by 40 feet (320 square feet) that can carry up to 47,000 pounds.

Sea cans are one of the pieces in a building phase that could potentially lead to providing an affordable housing option in the Bow Valley, said Chuck Lemieux, owner and president of Blocks Container Structures, which put the modular house together.

Description by architects

01. A multi-species architecture. Eva, Carlos, the Malinois dogs Bicho and Bomba, the Harris owl, five families of swifts, six of kestrels and twenty sparrows, are companion species. All of them live and learn together in this shipping container building 30 kilometers west of Madrid. Located between farm fields, in a rural environment that has been altered in recent decades by urbanization and intensive agriculture with pesticides, the Educan school is testing how to recover the environmental conditions of this ecosystem.

Its architecture is a multispecies design. While pairs of dogs and humans practice training in the two main classrooms, the birds nest in the nest-facades on the upper floor, with the ideal views and orientations for them. The small birds of prey feed on rodents, keeping their balance with crops and other plants; Smaller birds and field bats, which also inhabit the letters on the south facade, feed on insects, including mosquitoes that carry some canine diseases, and are part of the pollination cycles of flowers and plants in the adjoining fields. Sparrows have joined this self-regulating ecosystem in an unplanned way, nesting in the circular holes on the edges of the shipping containers.

Non-humans are the center of the design. The floors, usually designed for people with shoes, adapt to the pads and joints of canine paws — the training rooms are covered with artificial grass with an elastomeric base, approved for dog training, in removable rolls; the theory lecture classrooms are covered with exposed arid concrete made of semi-polished river boulders. The average height of eyes drops from 160 to 50 cm. The interior openings are raised to heights greater than one meter to avoid dog distractions; the louvered shutters shade the south facade, leaving enough space under them for dogs to pass through to the outside, where the rainwater that falls on the roof is collected in large drinking bowls for dogs and birds. The word becomes bark, and the interior surfaces are lined with sound-insulating pyramids with high acoustic absorption to minimize echo, noise and reverberation.

02. Material crossovers and construction innovation. Diverse materials are used in this building, combining different construction techniques, trades and production systems: from material ecology and waste reduction in the reuse of shipping containers, to the adaptability and thermal inertia of concrete, smooth and undulating formwork made of shipping container wall sheets; from standardization and optimization of industrial sheet metal panels to precision of CNC cut laminated wood joints; from the standardization of basic modules such as 40'HC shipping containers to the hand-crafted ironwork work that allows to customize details, assemblies or new elements such as bench legs, lamps or large sliders that open and close spaces; from automated air conditioning systems, to manual bioclimatic control elements such as perforated shutters or roller blinds; from the material weight of the foundation and concrete wall to the lightness of the rest of the prefabricated and pre-assembled elements.

1000 sqft Shipping Container Home, Seattle, Washington






This 1,000-square-foot shipping container home in Delridge, Seattle, demonstrates how six 20-foot containers can be transformed into a distinctive and comfortable two-story residence. Designed by homeowner Julianna Carlson, the house combines an intentionally industrial exterior with a warm nautical-inspired interior, including French doors, concrete kitchen countertops, space-saving furniture, and a porthole-style detail in the upstairs bedroom. A generous 1,000-square-foot patio expands the usable living area, while the modular arrangement was planned to accommodate an additional container in the future. Built in 2017, the project also highlights the practical challenges of permitting, interior construction, and adapting conventional housing expectations to container architecture.

When Julianna Carlson left her parents’ Delridge home for college in Santa Barbara, she never expected to tire of the eternal California sunshine. But the longtime Pacific Northwesterner couldn’t stay away—she graduated in 2015 and returned. She’s now settled on a plot of land she purchased just down the street from the house she grew up in.

Although the neighborhood is familiar, her home is completely novel. Disappointed by homes available in her price range, Carlson decided to do something different: The political science major, with no architectural experience, sketched out her own home made from used shipping containers.

Carlson purchased six 20-foot shipping containers from DryBox, a Chehalis company that provides shipping containers with custom modifications. The containers were trucked in and stacked in two days during the spring of 2017. Window holes were pre-cut based on Carlson’s specs, but the interior build-out—drywall for exterior-facing walls, plumbing, installing electrical—took almost a year, largely because obtaining proper permits wasn’t an easy process, she says. The city didn’t really know how to handle a container home.

On their exteriors, Carlson intentionally left the shipping containers—four on bottom, two stacked on top—largely untouched. But inside, she went with a cozy nautical theme: The handrail to the master bedroom upstairs is reminiscent of those on a ferry; tiny painted cargo boats are stenciled onto an accent wall downstairs; and a porthole in the master bedroom’s walk-in closet gives the feeling of being in a ship’s hull.

“I really wanted the interior space to feel bigger than it was,” Carlson says of maximizing her 1,000 square feet. “We’re a boat family—my parents used to commercial fish. I firmly believe that boats have it figured out when it comes to putting as much as possible in a small space.” To do that in her home, she relies largely on portable furniture—like a wheeled slab coffee table she made—that can be pushed aside when she and boyfriend Kris Wilson are entertaining. There’s also a 1,000-square-foot outdoor patio, which doubles the livable space (as weather allows).

Now 25, Carlson likely won’t live here forever. But she says she’s designed her home in a way that will allow for another container to be added to provide more space later. After all, she figures she only spent 70 percent of what it would have cost her to buy a comparable existing home. “I’ve really fallen in love with shipping containers, more than I ever thought possible,” she says.

This 2,000 sq ft shipping container home, the first shipping container home in Arizona, is made from six recycled shipping containers. Located in historic Southside Flagstaff, it is a two-story dwelling with a spacious atrium living-dining room, two baths, two bedrooms, two studio/offices, plant solarium, galley kitchen, and five decks with views of the San Francisco Peaks and the lively street life of this outdoor-loving and friendly university town.

Comfortable in wintertime, with passive solar and in-floor radiant heating, and in summertime, with natural mountain breezes, the shipping container house collects solar electric power and harvests rainwater and snowmelt. The insulation is biofoam, recycled denim, and exterior ceramic coating. Aluminum dual-pane aluminum windows and translucent insulated fiberglass fill the house with natural light.

The recipient of a Coconino County Sustainability Award, the shipping container home was designed by communication designer Marie Jones and architects Tony Brown and Tom Hahn of Ecosa Institute, and was built by Dan Miller. Construction was completed in 2011.

This project features recycled ocean-going shipping containers as the main structure; but the home will also include a whole host of other environmental and energy-efficient design ideas and materials. The home is though to be the first shipping-container-based house in Flagstaff, and one of the first multi-story container projects in Arizona.

The containers have been pre-fabricated in Phoenix and trucked to the northern Arizona site for their placement into the project.  With the containers placed and connected together, the home will be completed on-site under the direction of the owners.  The project is planned to be ready to be occupied in late 2010.

This project uses five 40-foot long "high-cube" containers for the main house, in a criss-cross plan that rises into an open, dayligh filled, two-story high atrium space.  This atrium will have operable windows to allow for natural "stack" ventilation, and will be capped off with a pitched roof angled for best performance with solar-electric photovoltaic panels. Across a raised deck from the main house, a detached 20-foor long, standard height container will house an artist studio. The entire project has been designed for rainwater and snowmelt harvesting by Barnabus Kane of TBK Associates in Prescott, Arizona, and the site will also be finished with a permaculture based, minimal water use, native landscaping.

The exterior of the containers will retain their robust steel exterior, and be refurbished and repainted with a super-insulating ceramic based paint, in forest and sunset colors. A "floating" steel interior stair, as well as the entry porch, will be suspended on steel rods from the containers above, accessing the second floor bedrooms and roof decks made from portions of an additional container. Super-insulated windows with recycled content frames will be set back in recycled steel "shade boxes" that will keep the sun and snow at bay.  The project will also include soy=based spray-foam insulation, radiant floor heating, soy-stained concrete floors, photovoltaic panels, recycled metal structure and roofing, translucent super-insulating glazing, graywater recovery, low-water use fixtures and appliances, recycled content and non-toxic finishes and energy efficient lighting.  site fencing and other landscape features will be made from portions of the containers that were cut away in fabrication.




This shipping container home in Arizona has been accepted by the new Coconino County Sustainable Building Program, and will aim to achieve an "Advanced" rating under the program upon completion.

The Hanging House was named because it is elevated from the natural ground level of the site where it was located. This is because this 2 bedroom shipping container house is surrounded by native trees, so the windows are level with the treetops and the balconies blend with the branches. In addition, the soil remains original, preserving drainage and root dynamics, which were not impaired because the minimum of concrete was used in the foundations. The premise of the project was a country house that was integrated with the local ecosystem, with sustainability and recyclability. For this reason, the construction system with recycled shipping containers was adopted. In total, 80% of the materials are recycled. Internally, demolition wood predominates on the walls and ceiling. Green roof with reuse of rainwater, thermal and acoustic insulation are also the highlights of the house.

The purpose of occupying the property is as a country house. Internally, we favor the common areas of the 3 story shipping container house, living spaces, leisure and balconies. In total there are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The shipping container elevated house has no television or wifi system. To inhabit it, the rule is to disconnect and enjoy what nature and family life provide. Two wooden deck balconies provide interaction with native trees and fantastic views of rural Campos Novos Paulista, Brazil.

The implantation of the 3 story shipping container elevated house under the trees provides shade throughout the day, and the local winds combined with the wall insulation system provide excellent thermal comfort within the residence.

Metal pillars make the support of the house. The "v" system provides concrete savings and base area by generating a single base for two supports. The foundations are shallow because the weight of the house is relatively light and the ground is firm.

The green roof is of the modular type, which makes maintenance easy. It has a rainwater storage system to minimize the need for irrigation. This system provides greater thermal comfort inside the 2 bedroom shipping container elevated house and integrates it even further with nature.




The internal divisions are made of demolition wood. In addition to being a recycled material, it avoids the use of internal paint, since it already has its own finish. All the walls of the 2 bedroom shipping container house are insulated with a thermoacoustic blanket for greater thermal comfort. The environments have cross ventilation and wide openings for air exchange and thermal comfort. The 3 story shipping container house does not have an air conditioning system and remains pleasant even on the hottest days in São Paulo. The internal doors of the first floor of the shipping container house are made with reused plates from the cutouts of the containers, minimizing excess material.

The final residue of the work was reused in 70%, basically summarized in remains of wood and steel.

This four-bedroom, 1800 sf, shipping container modular house was completed in March 2019. Its a breakthrough project for MB Architecture and they hope it will provide a template for many future homeowners who may want to bypass the typical process of custom-designing and building homes.

Wrapped around a mature oak tree, a light-filled 4 bedroom shipping container modular house embraces the outdoors in more ways than one.

In the East Hampton village of Amagansett, Manhattan-based MB Architecture has completed their largest—and most complex—prefab project to date: a 1,800-square-foot shipping container home that emphasizes indoor/outdoor living.

"It’s the culmination of 10 years of research prototyping," says Maziar Behrooz, founder of MB Architecture. His award-winning cargotecture work drew the attention of the clients, a couple with three young children, who had been looking for an alternative to the ubiquitous wood-shingled homes in the Amagansett area.

"The fact that our prefab projects are less expensive and take less time to build was an additional incentive," adds Behrooz.

The home, dubbed the Amagansett Modular House, is modeled after MB Architecture’s insta_house — a scalable, prefab structure made of four 40-foot-long shipping containers that can be stacked together and installed in just one day.

To meet the clients’ requirements for a four-bedroom, three-bath retreat, the architects expanded upon the insta_house blueprint with an additional 40-foot container on the north side—connected to the main double-height volume via a glassed-in walkway—as well as a 10-foot container that hangs off the second floor.

These modifications also respond to the sloping site, which informed the placement and orientation of the west-facing building. The external corrugated metal walls were painted black to help the building recede into the landscape, while multiple floor-to-ceiling windows and glazed doors create seamless connections between the interiors and the outdoors.

"We wanted to create a comfortable, playful, and fun interior for both kids and parents," explains Behrooz of the open layout and dramatic, geometric facade. "And to illustrate how a small house may feel very spacious."

The containers were prefabricated off site before being trucked to the site and installed in two days. The kitchen cabinets, bathroom tiles and fixtures, glassed-in walkway, landscape elements, and pool were added in the weeks after installation.

The speed and efficiency of construction also helped reduce costs, which, excluding the landscape elements and pool, were "in the low to mid $300s per square foot," says Behrooz. "While this is a very high number in, say, upstate New York, it’s significantly lower than average for its location on the east end of Long Island, where construction can cost $500 to $800 per square foot. Our cost of construction is region dependent."




Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the project was how infrequently Behrooz met face-to-face with the clients. The busy couple chose to meet the architects a handful of times, and only twice on site—once when they first purchased the land, and the second time when the house was nearly complete. This arrangement that was somewhat unusual for the practice, which is accustomed to recurrent client meetings.

"So, we were a little worried about how they would feel when coming, with their children, to see the finished house for the first time," says Behrooz. "Their reaction was super joyous, and each kid just ran into a room and found their space. Later that day, we received an email from them saying that the house ‘felt like a temple.’"

Sustainable Lifestyle Lab established by the Sustainable Design Institute of Arts and Science research center, Tsinghua University and Participatory Community Development Center. The sustainable modular container house with roof terrace and garden for rooftop organic farming composed of six containers, which applied low-carbon, healthy and green philosophy to real life, so as to let more people to understand and participate in it.

Material

Due to some restrictions, the construction time frame must be very short, and the house design should be efficient and recyclable. So the design team chose modular container house with roof terrace and garden for rooftop organic farming. The box structure, windows, doors, roofs, walls and floors are prefabricated in the factory.

Space and Function

The house composed of six containers (6055mm*2435mm*2790mm), using ‘modular design’ idea: Each box inside is a standard space unit with different functions. Different combination patterns form various function space. The container house includes three bedrooms, exhibition space, a storage room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The entrance container is located at an angle of 90 degrees to other five containers, forming a courtyard.

Environmental Friendliness

The production cost of this sustainable modular container house with roof terrace and garden for rooftop organic farming, is low, and the container is energy saving, low-carbon and reusable. It can be transported conveniently and the transportation cost is very low. The container house construction process is easy, quick, and resource-saving, with less noise and dust pollution.




Eco-circle system includes:

  • sewage collection, treatment, re-use: the reclaimed water system;
  • kitchen waste, excreta collection, treatment, re-use: biogas digester;
  • solar energy, wind energy and rainwater utilization;
  • organic farming.

This awesome Container Resort Home was designed and built by Anand Bungalows in Malaysia and the construction includes natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting, plus water and energy efficient design.

The Container Resort Home is located in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang and it consists of six, stacked shipping containers – four of which are oriented south and north, and two oriented at an angle of 90° - west and east. The four 40 ft containers are stacked 2x2 to create a two-story volume with the windows and doors oriented to the north direction to form partial enclosures and shade for the windows and balconies. In between the two perpendicularly located container volumes, an intermediate double height atrium was designed and constructed allowing for proper natural ventilation – the windows on opposing sides encourage efficient cross ventilation and due to the air pressure difference a hot air rises naturally.

The home was built on a reinforced concrete pier foundation, has a light footprint and low impact to the surrounding land. Provided by the project the large shed roofs help to keep sun off the containers surface and minimize heat gain from direct sunlight, while directing and collecting rainwater into a large storage cistern located underneath the house. The houshold grey water from dishwasher, kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, showers and tubs is recycled and used in the gardens along with the rainwater. Moreover, natural daylighting, energy-efficient appliances and low flow water fixtures help reduce the footprint of the container home even further.

In a trendy spot on the most popular decoration street in the city, Gabriel Monteiro da Silva Mall, the last empty lot remained.

The client rented the land and instructed the architect to develop a very low-cost project, something that could be quickly built, respecting the existing trees.

The idea was to use shipping containers, reuse a finished object, a surplus from the current intense exchange of goods.

The project was organized into two container tunnels, taking advantage of the linearity of their internal spaces, and a double-height hangar connected to them, a contrasting cubic volume. Huge polycarbonate sliding doors connect the store with the city and an internal garden.

The modular shipping container home is composed of diverse steel elements, including: 6 repurposed containers, a 10,000 gallon water tank, a Butler pre-engineered building, and a steel shade canopy with integrated metal framing system that provides wind, fire and earthquake protection, extraordinary strength, as well as large door and window openings to maximize cooling, ventilation, and natural daylighting. By combining mass-produced and high-efficiency modular construction methods with contemporary innovative design in one of the most harsh climate zones in United States, designers have developed a sustainable and low-cost housing system that can be delivered and quickly assembled anywhere in the world.

A prototype hybrid house, also known as the Tim Palen Studio at Shadow Mountain is the first repurposed container home permitted and built in the Mojave Desert. Based on the fuel-efficient Prius automobile engineering concept, the residence combines the energy and production efficiencies of diverse pre-engineered building and energy systems working together seamlessly to produce a smooth-running hybrid green machine for living.

The residence is a prototype of 2nd generation pre-fab design and a kit-like housing product developed by ecotechbuild, the design-build subsidiary of ecotechdesign. It is constructed from 5-20′ long recycled cargo containers that were fabricated and finished in Los Angeles and then shipped to the site where they were erected and stacked 2 high in 15 minutes each. All site work, including foundations and utility placement was constructed at the remote desert site during container fabrication in Los Angeles.

The residence is the 1 bedroom, 1-1/2 bath, 2 story model hybridhouse_1 design that has been adapted for a media client who required a separate photo studio and storage building. The studio is constructed of a Butler pre-engineered steel building with plug-in cargo container storage. It is naturally daylite with 22″ dia. Solutubes, which can be manually controlled and temperature balanced using efficient, dimmable strip lighting.

The container residence and the pre-engineered, steel studio structure act as two bookends that support framing and, in turn a perforated metal shade canopy that wraps the container’s roof, south-facing steel walls and the dramatic 20′ high outside living space, aka solar breezeway to provide protection against desert heat, glare, wind and blowing sand. The breezeway, in turn moderates and then directs a flow of air through the container spaces to enhance passive cooling. A naturally lit, steel-clad stair structure connects the 2 level stacked containers and doubles as a 20′ story high photo gallery in which to display artwork.

  • Living Roof System: movable, bolt and add-on modules use greywater irrigation and are planted with native desert plants and sedums to absorb heat, glare, dust and CO2.
  • Water Conservation: integrated greywater for irrigation, water harvesting and storage systems.
  • Energy Conservation: an innovative steel framework allows for the placement of a “cool roof” and insulation system and a triple wall insulation system combine to create a building envelope that exceeds California energy code requirements by 50%. All appliances, fixtures and heating systems are Energy Star rated.
  • Reduced Costs: Finished construction costs, including footings and sitework was $150/SF, far below construction costs for comparable prefab home or manufactured home construction.

This modular container home is located about 600 feet from the ocean and is consist of six modules made of shipping containers. In the four containers on the ground level there are four bedrooms, in the two containers on top there are dining room, living room and open kitchen. The home's features are white oak floors, cypress decking and siding, white thermoplastic roof, spray foam insulation, energy-efficient windows and Energy Star appliances.

At the time it was built, it was novel. Seven years later, it’s still an East End oddity—even though it doesn’t appear all that peculiar at first glance.

Located on the Napeague Stretch in Amagansett along Montauk Highway, the Beach Box is a beach house like any other, except this summer retreat is constructed from six used shipping containers.

The nearly 2,000-square-foot residence built in 2011 sits on 0.17 acre and has four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and one half-bath. There is also a custom chef’s kitchen and white oak floors. Outside are 1,300 square feet of decking and a heated pool, plus a new roof deck. The siding is cypress and the decking is cedar—all certified sustainable materials.

Douglas Elliman real estate broker Andrew Anderson developed Beach Box, with ambitions that it would be the first of six to be built on the South Fork in a two-year period. However, the first Beach Box is still the only one.

Mr. Anderson explained on Friday that after Beach Box he moved on to a much higher end construction model that shipping containers were not suited for. Now the East Hampton-based firm that he’s a part of, MAP Development, builds spec houses in the $4 million to $7 million range.

“There are some constraints with container construction that would have become cost prohibitive for me to accomplish what I need to, to sell at that price point,” Mr. Anderson said. “If I were to build something in the Beach Boxes price category again, I would certainly revisit the use of containers for a project like that.”

To construct Beach Box, MAP Development partnered with SG Blocks of Brooklyn Heights, which makes everything from retail locations and Starbucks cafés to military barracks out of retired steel shipping containers that otherwise would have been melted down.

A standard shipping container has an 8-foot ceiling height, which is lower than what is desired in high-end residential construction, Mr. Anderson noted. While the boxes can be cut and stacked to achieve greater ceiling heights, that would undermine the benefits of building with shipping containers.

“The more you start to manipulate the boxes, the less cost effective it is, and you also start losing the sustainability,” Mr. Anderson said.

Because the boxes are manipulated to accommodate windows, doors, stairs and more before they are delivered to the building site, they can be assembled in just one day, which was the case with Beach Box.

Beach Box asked $1,395,000 when it hit the market in 2012. It was sold in 2013 for $975,000, a considerable discount.

Mr. Anderson attributed the gap between the original asking price and the final sale price to the fact that Beach Box is located right on the heavily trafficked Montauk Highway. “It was harder to overcome than we had anticipated,” he said.

The purchaser was officially listed as Casa Di Bianco Sabio, a limited liability company. The name is Italian, and it translates to “House of White Sand.”

The man behind the LLC was William White, the president and CEO of broadcast promotions agency Firefly Creative Entertainment Group. Mr. White candidly explained Friday that he chose the Italian name to give the property “some cache” and to identify it as something other than a “shipping container house.”

“You would never know, unless someone told you,” Mr. White said of Beach Box’s unconventional building materials. “The only thing that’s exposed, as far as the shipping container, is an accent wall in the downstairs foyer—and it’s just more for architectural design effects—and then also the ceiling of the top floor has the shipping container exposed. Other than that, you would never know.”

When he reveals his beach house is made out of shipping containers, it raises eyebrows.

“My friends in Connecticut, they’re a little poshy, and they keep going, ‘Don’t you live in a dumpster?” Mr. White said.

He tells them, “No, it’s 2,000 square feet, four bedrooms, three baths”

“Isn’t it a tiny house?” they persist, to which he reiterates it is “2,000 square feet, with 3,000 feet of exterior decking.”

“They are just kind of kidding around, but still, people in their minds, they have no idea what a shipping container house is, and they still think it’s probably flimsy, or to them it’s just a step above a tin shed with a garden,” Mr. White said.

The reality is quite different.

“It’s pretty grand and it’s wide open space, especially having it being reversed, with the bedrooms downstairs and the main living upstairs.”

And because of all the windows, the views are spectacular, he added.

Deciding to take further advantage of the views—the Atlantic Ocean less than 1,000 feet to the south and Napeague Harbor an even shorter distance to the north—Mr. White added a rooftop deck to Beach Box this past May.

“It’s spectacular, not only sunrises, but sunsets,” he said.

Now, Mr. White has put Beach Box on sale for more than double the original purchase price. It hit the market in the fall for $2,250,000, though the asking price was reduced to $2,100,000 in November.




He said that as much as he enjoys Beach Box, he had gotten little use of out it of late because now his career requires him to spend more time in Los Angeles—his company produces promos for FX shows such as “American Horror Story” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” and he is developing a feature film.

“If it sells it’s great,” Mr. White said. “If it doesn’t sell, I still get to keep it.”

He said that what attracted him to Beach Box in the first place is that “it is a quintessential beach house,” just a quick walk to the ocean and the Lobster Roll.

“When you go to the Hamptons, you think beach, not country cottage in the middle of a farm,” Mr. White said.
