The 640-square-foot shipping container homes − one at 1108 Cody St. and another at 1107 Cody St. − are fully furnished, with two bedrooms, one bathroom, a porch and small yard. The project, a joint effort with the Community Action Program of Evansville and the city's Department of Metropolitan Development, is part of a long-range feasibility study to see if this design works for the city.

CAPE CEO Gary Roan presented the homes during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in November 2024:

"It's always been my philosophy affordable housing doesn't mean sacrificing quality or having fewer amenities," he said. "To me it means providing the type of housing I would want to live in."

Roan said builders invested in energy-efficient appliances, solar energy and landscaping.

Description by architects

Concept

Concept of space evoked on three main grounds; to create a hymn of solitary through a more contemporary yet quirky design approach with a time worthy construction period. The space was considered as the simplest of its expression. Neither form dominated nor space, a perfect mingling and cohesion to generate ooze sophistication. To create a subtle experience of one’s being and non-being at the same moment, the project adorns emptiness with grace. Space here is not stagnant; it’s allowed to flow with its highest ardencies, form is only the resonance of space.

Architecture

The location is mostly secluded of settlements at present and therefore remains little less noise. The serene place is a perfect hide out from every day hustle-bustle of busy urban life.

The I-beam steel frame skeleton is finely embellished with four pieces of shipping containers. The longest one is adjoined with two, forming the bedrooms. The rustic romanticism those containers evokes, are taken delightfully by the architect to recreate a place that just impeccably out of the world, surreal.

Triple height atrium with green foliage of almond tree is indeed a solemn beauty for anyone who steps inside. The soft screening of vines in the top will soon be a veil of green velvet. The embedded greenery on container top and I-beam steel frame acts as buffers to lessen the heat penetration.

Project technology

Extruded steel structure embraced the container gracefully. The whole frame was erected part by part as an independent system where those metal boxes were befitted in between the infrastructure. For ultimate makeovers of containers and to make them livable, necessary cut, holes and adjoining for facade treatment have been done after the accurate placement in desired level to avoid the fragility.

The hefty look of those containers has become dramatically airier with some skillful ensemble of architectural details. The floated platforms of the house, intertwining stairs and diverse direction of container placement have made the project more visually eye-catching.

Materials

The off track material was shipping container itself. The significance also lied beneath for its consideration of reuse, thus initiating a sustainable approach in design. Major inventory of materials are of reused version.

Constraints and solutions achieved

Apart from the structural execution, the complex procedure of the spatial transformation of shipping container into a cozy home stay was a substantial design constrain. The non-enchanting and austere look of hard core shipping containers had to transform into a ideal, cozy built form. The interior has slits and cut through to add volume to the space. The scale of individual container has been maneuvered considering both internal and external space dialogues with it. Exposed steel structures framed the invisible walls thus creating with a harmony of visible containers.

Details of landscaping

Clearly the landscaping has been kept bare minimum to enjoy the enchantment of the house. The open vast front yard is clung to adorn the structure; hence, created the perfect soliloquy for this outskirt den.

This private residence is set within a steep wooded site in Marin California commuting distance from San Francisco. Driven as a response to ever-increasing construction costs and lengthening time schedules in the heated market of the Bay Area; this house exploits the proven concept of recycled shipping containers as a fast, effective and cheap alternative to traditional house building. Prefabricated then installed on-site within days.

A pair of shipping containers measuring 20x8 feet are set parallel to each other with a 4-foot infill space between them forming a 20x20 foot space. These arrangements allows for the minimal intervention and cutting of the container and standard repetitive glazing units. Complete sides, either one or two are removed allowing for large floor-to-ceiling glazing along the long edge; as in the kitchen dining and the main living space. Alternatively, simply one shorter end is removed; the doors being replaced with glazing as in the lower bedrooms.

In total eight 20x8 ft containers are arranged in this manner stacked and rotated 90 deg. to form this flexible 2 bedroom modular shipping container home on steep slope with 1440 sqft of internal space. In this layout, the lower floor contains the bedrooms, bathrooms, mechanical, and storage. The connecting stairs occupying the 4ft between the containers. Above this, the entrance, loggia, and main living area is an open space that spreads the full length of the building. The centrally located stacked stair connects up again to the dining and kitchen areas and the first of two large roof terraces.

A cohesive elegant functioning modern home on steep slope. The luxurious results are often unassociated with such building techniques.

This 2,000 sq ft shipping container home, the first shipping container home in Arizona, is made from six recycled shipping containers. Located in historic Southside Flagstaff, it is a two-story dwelling with a spacious atrium living-dining room, two baths, two bedrooms, two studio/offices, plant solarium, galley kitchen, and five decks with views of the San Francisco Peaks and the lively street life of this outdoor-loving and friendly university town.

Comfortable in wintertime, with passive solar and in-floor radiant heating, and in summertime, with natural mountain breezes, the shipping container house collects solar electric power and harvests rainwater and snowmelt. The insulation is biofoam, recycled denim, and exterior ceramic coating. Aluminum dual-pane aluminum windows and translucent insulated fiberglass fill the house with natural light.

The recipient of a Coconino County Sustainability Award, the shipping container home was designed by communication designer Marie Jones and architects Tony Brown and Tom Hahn of Ecosa Institute, and was built by Dan Miller. Construction was completed in 2011.

Description by Ecosa Institute

This project features recycled ocean-going shipping containers as the main structure; but the home will also include a whole host of other environmental and energy-efficient design ideas and materials. The home is though to be the first shipping-container-based house in Flagstaff, and one of the first multi-story container projects in Arizona.

The containers have been pre-fabricated in Phoenix and trucked to the northern Arizona site for their placement into the project.  With the containers placed and connected together, the home will be completed on-site under the direction of the owners.  The project is planned to be ready to be occupied in late 2010.

This project uses five 40-foot long "high-cube" containers for the main house, in a criss-cross plan that rises into an open, dayligh filled, two-story high atrium space.  This atrium will have operable windows to allow for natural "stack" ventilation, and will be capped off with a pitched roof angled for best performance with solar-electric photovoltaic panels. Across a raised deck from the main house, a detached 20-foor long, standard height container will house an artist studio. The entire project has been designed for rainwater and snowmelt harvesting by Barnabus Kane of TBK Associates in Prescott, Arizona, and the site will also be finished with a permaculture based, minimal water use, native landscaping.

The exterior of the containers will retain their robust steel exterior, and be refurbished and repainted with a super-insulating ceramic based paint, in forest and sunset colors. A "floating" steel interior stair, as well as the entry porch, will be suspended on steel rods from the containers above, accessing the second floor bedrooms and roof decks made from portions of an additional container. Super-insulated windows with recycled content frames will be set back in recycled steel "shade boxes" that will keep the sun and snow at bay.  The project will also include soy=based spray-foam insulation, radiant floor heating, soy-stained concrete floors, photovoltaic panels, recycled metal structure and roofing, translucent super-insulating glazing, graywater recovery, low-water use fixtures and appliances, recycled content and non-toxic finishes and energy efficient lighting.  site fencing and other landscape features will be made from portions of the containers that were cut away in fabrication.

This shipping container home in Arizona has been accepted by the new Coconino County Sustainable Building Program, and will aim to achieve an "Advanced" rating under the program upon completion.

Description by the project team.

Daily life mobilizes us at a dizzying pace. Starting with the choice of the neighborhood, located on the outskirts of San Francisco (Argentina), going through the acquisition of the lot and defining itself in the project, "La Casa Container", it aims to be a resting place away from the center, characterized by the environmental quality of its immediate context. The versatility of its spaces accompanies the changes in contemporary ways of life and family composition.

La Casa Container is a result of a search for technical, aesthetic and functional innovation. Its morphology is made up of two metal boxes arranged in an "L", which structure the ground floor containing all the services (entrance, kitchen and pantry in one container. Laundry room, bathroom, barbecue, workshop and warehouse in another).

The void between the two boxes is where public life takes place: barbecue and dining room. Above them, on the upper floor, is the unifying element of the complex: a large solid volume of traditional construction that gravitates on the shipping containers, sheltering the private area of bedrooms and bathroom inside.

This 2 bedroom shipping container home project is characterized by responding to three basic premises: technological innovation, construction speed and simplification of materials. The maritime containers arose as a response to the original design of the house, which sought to use elements originally conceived for another function, recycling them to face a new challenge.

Its interiors are conditioned with polyurethane foam, which in ceilings was painted with latex, leaving it visible and in vertical walls it was covered with gypsum rock panels, hiding facilities. In lightened slabs, the same logic is followed, painting and highlighting the constructive elements that compose it. All the floors are made of smoothed cement, accompanying the spatial continuity of the La Casa Container shipping container home thanks to its large seamless panels.

To the outside, the 2 bedroom shipping container home is closed by a blind facade to preserve privacy and protect itself from the most pernicious orientations (South and West). The openings located towards the street were made using the steel sheet extracted from the openings in the shipping containers, the access door is the best example. Inside, its rooms open up to the green of the patio, enjoying the best orientations for these latitudes (north and east), making the most of natural lighting and ventilation throughout the day. Here, the openings are made of high-performance aluminum with hermetic double glazing for proper habitability.

The Hanging House was named because it is elevated from the natural ground level of the site where it was located. This is because this 2 bedroom shipping container house is surrounded by native trees, so the windows are level with the treetops and the balconies blend with the branches. In addition, the soil remains original, preserving drainage and root dynamics, which were not impaired because the minimum of concrete was used in the foundations. The premise of the project was a country house that was integrated with the local ecosystem, with sustainability and recyclability. For this reason, the construction system with recycled shipping containers was adopted. In total, 80% of the materials are recycled. Internally, demolition wood predominates on the walls and ceiling. Green roof with reuse of rainwater, thermal and acoustic insulation are also the highlights of the house.

The purpose of occupying the property is as a country house. Internally, we favor the common areas of the 3 story shipping container house, living spaces, leisure and balconies. In total there are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The shipping container elevated house has no television or wifi system. To inhabit it, the rule is to disconnect and enjoy what nature and family life provide. Two wooden deck balconies provide interaction with native trees and fantastic views of rural Campos Novos Paulista, Brazil.

The implantation of the 3 story shipping container elevated house under the trees provides shade throughout the day, and the local winds combined with the wall insulation system provide excellent thermal comfort within the residence.

Metal pillars make the support of the house. The "v" system provides concrete savings and base area by generating a single base for two supports. The foundations are shallow because the weight of the house is relatively light and the ground is firm.

The green roof is of the modular type, which makes maintenance easy. It has a rainwater storage system to minimize the need for irrigation. This system provides greater thermal comfort inside the 2 bedroom shipping container elevated house and integrates it even further with nature.

The internal divisions are made of demolition wood. In addition to being a recycled material, it avoids the use of internal paint, since it already has its own finish. All the walls of the 2 bedroom shipping container house are insulated with a thermoacoustic blanket for greater thermal comfort. The environments have cross ventilation and wide openings for air exchange and thermal comfort. The 3 story shipping container house does not have an air conditioning system and remains pleasant even on the hottest days in São Paulo. The internal doors of the first floor of the shipping container house are made with reused plates from the cutouts of the containers, minimizing excess material.

The final residue of the work was reused in 70%, basically summarized in remains of wood and steel.

This orange shipping container home is located just 2 miles from vibrant and beautiful downtown Salida, Colorado. Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, kick back in style as you gaze across at the Collegiate Peaks - with the highest concentration of 14’ers in the State.

There are many ways to use shipping containers, from classic urban farms to modern off-the-grid getaways to automatic all-in-one swimming pools. Each one of those projects is made from a surplus shipping container unit and upcycled into a completely brand new structure or building, and they are often praised as a modern eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional construction methods and building materials.

Often construction process connected with shipping containers looks so exciting and we love watch how shipping container units are transformed into modern livable spaces or any other buildings, and the latest to cross our desk is this beautiful two-bedroom and two-bathroom bright orange home in Colorado. Designed and built by Tommy Lorden, Boulder real estate agent, as a vacation Airbnb rental property, the bright orange shipping container house uses two 40 ft shipping containers side by side and features comfortable decor and clean lines.

Some shipping container homes include industrial in the interior decor, with a bit of traditional farmhouse details, but this interior looks to the 1950s - 60s for decor inspiration. Tommy Lorden owns a classic midcentury home, and he wanted to build an overhanging roof construction and add a large deck for convenient outdoor-indoor living.

A transparent glass railing used to maximize beautiful views of the mountains, and the owner wanted for an entry staircase location the side of the shipping container so as leave the sight lines not interrupted. Inside, the shipping container house features plywood walls with midcentury-inspired design, white counters and cabinets. The orange color scheme allows the Big Chill retro fridge to use an aqua blue color, and the bedrooms connect to the expansive deck through sliding glass doors.

Located in a beautiful Cordoba, this two 40 ft HC and two 20 ft HC 2 bedroom shipping containers home in Spain is a functional and sustainable home that can grow and evolve with the family and that, in the future, and if necessary, can move to another location.

Those were, among others, the reasons that led Marta and Alvaro to decide on a construction from recycled shipping containers. "Working with containers allows us, on the one hand, the work in the workshop and, on the other, to lower the costs derived from industrialization without this being at odds with a suggestive architectural design. In addition, we reuse parts that are no longer suitable for maritime transport, but which are a valuable element from the architectural and constructive point of view to give solution to certain situations," say architects from Tercera Piel Arquitectura.

Composed of four sea shipping containers - two containers 40' HC and two 20' HC, the prefab modular 2 bedroom shipping container home is arranged on a floor that protrudes 5 cm from the natural terrain and on which the containers are directly supported.

"We have looked for a clear and simple volumetry. In addition to not hiding the containers we tried not to generate encounters that supposed an added cost in the execution ", explains Francisco Carmona.

The  prefab modular shipping container home consists of a living room connected to the kitchen and two bedrooms with their respective bathrooms, all arranged on the ground floor.

The living area has been designed to double height to give a greater sense of spaciousness both to this space and to the office arranged as a loft above the kitchen and that opens onto it.

This area of  the study, which is accessed by a light metal staircase, is also leading to the roof projected as a terrace and arranged over the bedrooms on the ground floor.

The double-height floor slab has not been totally disassembled, but the panel and part of the beams at the base of the container are eliminated to avoid the twisting that occurs during assembly and disassembly. In addition, these also offer a practical solution for the lighting in the room.

Also the excess sheets that were accumulated throughout the construction process find a practical use. Here they have served to create the distributor of access to housing. Arranged next to the kitchen, the contrast between the recovered old door from the demolition of an old church with the metal sheet of the containers that has been preserved as a separation in this area draws attention in this space. The rest of interior finishes has been made in plasterboard panels.

The kitchen, a clear and functional space, opens into the adjoining room through a large window. The window can be opened or closed by an ingenious system of pulleys. In this way, despite maintaining eye contact at all times, you can prevent the passage of smoke and odors to the rest of the modular shipping container home when necessary.

The wide bar that connects the kitchen with the living room, with an envelope flown towards both rooms, can also function as an improvised dining table when necessary, thanks to its great capacity and the fact that it has seats on both sides.

The wooden floors, the originals of the containers, treated to give them their current decorative finish, confer a note of warmth to the environments, of eclectic atmosphere thanks to the mixture of old pieces with others of contemporary design. Without forgetting elements of an industrial nature, such as stools in the kitchen or standing lights that are used as ambient lighting.

The numerous openings to the exterior contribute natural light to the house, designed according to sustainability criteria.

"In our different studies and proposals for containers, for the visible or hidden skin conditions  we used one constructive system or another. For the visible skin, as it is the case that concerns us, it is used (from outside to inside): exterior treatment from white ceramic paint that allows a cooler wall - an important condition in this case due to the high summer temperatures in the area, the container wall itself, air chamber, multi-reflector sheet for thermal insulation, mineral wool for acoustic insulation and a gypsum cardboard backing system", explains Francisco Carmona.

For the non-passable roof, acoustic and multi-reflective insulation plasterboard and, on the outside, a steel reinforcement mesh, expanded polystyrene, waterproofing sheet and gravel finish have been used. The walkable roof uses a similar base, with an easy maintenance ceramic tile finish.

The mixture of recovered elements - like the pallet that houses the doormat at the entrance of the house - with old and unique pieces, the result of the owners' passion for antiques, is a constant throughout this project.

The prefab modular shipping container home is developed mainly on the ground floor, composed of the two largest containers, which houses the living room, kitchen and two bedrooms with bathrooms, all of them with direct access to the outside. On the upper level, a study has been located through which you can access the roof terrace, arranged over the sleeping area.

"This project has the added value of serving as a prototype and laboratory for testing systems, materials and constructive solutions," architects from Tercera Piel Arquitectura say, to add an interesting reflection: "working architecture as a process is one of the added values that for us in this project; return to those origins in which the difference between architecture and construction was not easy".

The project consists from 4 high cube containers - two downstairs, two upstairs. For creating two terraces on each level there are offset. The internal area is 120 square meters.

The container house has two floors. The ground floor includes living room, laundry room, kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom with bathroom, tool room and terrace. The guest bedroom has walk-in closet and bathroom, studio, hall-gallery, terrace, double height living and dining room are upstairs. The openings in facades can be either closed or completely open if it is desirable.

The shipping containers have a lot of advantages. For instance, they have recycling structure; they can be constructed very fast. And if the location was changed the desing should not be changed, and it has modular advantages.

But containers also have the challenges such as temperature control (in such case the house was built with longer facades north-south).  The entire interior was lined with thermal acoustic insulation for protecting from cold and for keeping warmth. When the temperature changes the metal construction moves and it makes noise during the rain.

This 2 bedroom shipping container house has passive heating systems and the owner plans to buy solar cells.

Interior of this 2 bedroom off-the-grid shipping container home provides cozy living space, in combination with beautiful mountain view this make the container house a very comfortable retreat place. Various green technologies were used in the project: solar water heating, passive cooling, pellet stove heating, green roof and others.

The main living area includes two 40 ft shipping container units that saddlebag a wedge shaped space. The shipping containers hold the function of office, bedrooms, kitchen, bath and laundry while the center space is used for living, dining and entry. The upper floor space is an open loft with a movable platform bed that can slide on tracks outdoors allowing to enjoy the beauty of starry sky at night and as a reference to the quintessential camping experience.
