Thanks largely to its status as a hotbed of contemporary design innovation, the city of Copenhagen has become one of the most desirable places in the world to live. Yet, as has been seen in places like Manhattan, increased desirability can come at a cost to local residents. Due to rapid growth and a successful university system, Copenhagen has fallen upon a shortage of both student housing and land available for traditional development. The only open, affordable land in the city is located within ports – but it is currently zoned to be protected from any permanent construction projects.

Enter Danish company CPH Containers and architect Søren Nielsen, a partner at Danish firm Vandkunsten Architects. By creating a structure of shipping containers, the team has created a student village that acts a temporary complex, able to vacate the land upon short notice with its close proximity to existing transportation infrastructure.

Indian practice Rakhee Shobhit Design Associates (RSDA) responded by repurposing old shipping containers to quickly create a series of bright living spaces that would provide an "escape from reality" with minimal impact on the landscape.

"The Container House does not conform to conventional residential design ideas," said the practice.

"Instead, it employs industrial materials as the exoskeleton to create a homely, cosy setting with a spatial dialogue between the interiors and the surroundings."

The 640-square-foot shipping container homes − one at 1108 Cody St. and another at 1107 Cody St. − are fully furnished, with two bedrooms, one bathroom, a porch and small yard. The project, a joint effort with the Community Action Program of Evansville and the city's Department of Metropolitan Development, is part of a long-range feasibility study to see if this design works for the city.

CAPE CEO Gary Roan presented the homes during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in November 2024:

"It's always been my philosophy affordable housing doesn't mean sacrificing quality or having fewer amenities," he said. "To me it means providing the type of housing I would want to live in."

Roan said builders invested in energy-efficient appliances, solar energy and landscaping.

The River Forest Lookout is an interesting project that puts shipping container-based architecture on a pedestal – literally. The tiny retreat takes the form of a fire lookout tower-style design that consists of two containers raised 60 ft (18 m) above the forest floor in Whitfield County, Georgia.

The River Forest Lookout is situated on 14 acres (5.6 hectares) of rural land and was constructed by owner Mark Derenthal and his family. It was a painstaking job that involved transporting everything to the rural site and assembling the base and stairs, then craning the heavily modified shipping containers into position.

Visitors access the dwelling by staircase. One of the shipping containers serves as an open plan living area. This hosts a some chairs and a dining table, plus a basic kitchen with a mini-fridge, a two-burner propane-powered stove and a microwave. The bedroom area is adjacent and has a double bed. There's plenty of shelving and some storage nooks, and the container has floor-to-ceiling windows and a skylight to maximize natural light inside. The second container, meanwhile, is totally taken up by a spacious bathroom which features a walk-in shower, a flushing toilet, and a sink.

Elsewhere lies a small balcony area with a table and seating for two, plus a BBQ. There's also a rooftop terrace, which is reached by a spiral staircase and contains a fire pit and some more seating.

Naturally there isn't a power grid in such a remote location so the River Forest Lookout runs fully off-the-grid with a rooftop solar panel array. Water comes from a nearby well and it has propane-powered heating, plus a small wood-burning stove, to keep the chill at bay.

With the desire to have a mortgage-free home, Jaimie and Dave have chosen to build a shipping container home. They purchased a small piece of land and spent about $80k turning two metal boxes into beautiful and comfy living spaces. They have stacked a 20ft container on top of a 40ft shipping container, which creates a deck on the upper floor. The budget has been restricted as they have done most of the work by themselves.

This two-story shipping container home has a beautiful brownish exterior with a small roofed section that protects the starting part of the deck. The interiors are bright with a rustic touch of wood flooring and cabinets. There is a spacious lounge, kitchen, bathroom and pantry on the main floor while the bedroom lies upstairs. Another beautiful sight is the abundance of mini planters found everywhere on the shipping container home.

They have included features they would need the most. It is not a luxurious house per se, but a dream mortgage-free home for the couple. The most exciting thing about this build is that the couple has built it on their own, which would have definitely demanded a lot of hard work. The result is really appreciable.

Aside from constructing the shipping container home for under $100k, they have also landscaped the property and built a workshop. They also linked these two structures with a suspension bridge.

Description by the project team.

The Purunã Observatory, located in the Metropolitan Region of the city of Curitiba, is a space designed to view the universe in a didactic way. This is a dream of a photographer who loves space and its natural phenomena.

Built in just 38 days, this project has a large part of donated materials. Among these materials, two shipping containers (a 12 meter shipping container and another 6 meter long shipping container) were used as a structural solution for fast, clean and economical construction.

Inside the 6 meter long shipping container there is an exclusive space for a telescope. Right in front of you there is a concrete deck to slide the machinery, and then you can view the sky in full. In the 12 meter long container, there is a classroom and a dormitory for two people, both equipped with a sanitary installation.

The wooden deck and roof are used to enhance the experience of watching the stars and everything else that the sky has. The east, west and south façades are completely lined with planks of high claved pine wood. However, the north façade reveals the use of shipping containers as a shelter amid local agriculture.

Description by the project team.

Daily life mobilizes us at a dizzying pace. Starting with the choice of the neighborhood, located on the outskirts of San Francisco (Argentina), going through the acquisition of the lot and defining itself in the project, "La Casa Container", it aims to be a resting place away from the center, characterized by the environmental quality of its immediate context. The versatility of its spaces accompanies the changes in contemporary ways of life and family composition.

La Casa Container is a result of a search for technical, aesthetic and functional innovation. Its morphology is made up of two metal boxes arranged in an "L", which structure the ground floor containing all the services (entrance, kitchen and pantry in one container. Laundry room, bathroom, barbecue, workshop and warehouse in another).

The void between the two boxes is where public life takes place: barbecue and dining room. Above them, on the upper floor, is the unifying element of the complex: a large solid volume of traditional construction that gravitates on the shipping containers, sheltering the private area of bedrooms and bathroom inside.

This 2 bedroom shipping container home project is characterized by responding to three basic premises: technological innovation, construction speed and simplification of materials. The maritime containers arose as a response to the original design of the house, which sought to use elements originally conceived for another function, recycling them to face a new challenge.

Its interiors are conditioned with polyurethane foam, which in ceilings was painted with latex, leaving it visible and in vertical walls it was covered with gypsum rock panels, hiding facilities. In lightened slabs, the same logic is followed, painting and highlighting the constructive elements that compose it. All the floors are made of smoothed cement, accompanying the spatial continuity of the La Casa Container shipping container home thanks to its large seamless panels.

To the outside, the 2 bedroom shipping container home is closed by a blind facade to preserve privacy and protect itself from the most pernicious orientations (South and West). The openings located towards the street were made using the steel sheet extracted from the openings in the shipping containers, the access door is the best example. Inside, its rooms open up to the green of the patio, enjoying the best orientations for these latitudes (north and east), making the most of natural lighting and ventilation throughout the day. Here, the openings are made of high-performance aluminum with hermetic double glazing for proper habitability.

Description by project team.

It was born as an urgent and circumstantial project. This then transforms into an elemental space, giving the feeling of versatility, flexibility and connection to nature.

Open House Container can be used as a home or as a multi-purpose space. The two containers are connected by a large cover (elevated roof), which produces an open space. This allows the house to be extended and transformed at certain times of the day in an artistic workshop or architectural office and at other times in a yoga room and a crossfit box.

It is a place that invites you to live more simply, freely and lightly. A direct relationship with nature is established in its close relationship with the outside. The habitable module has large windows that connect the interior space with the surroundings, giving the feeling of expansion.

The project has a minimum of environmental impact, since elements decommissioned from the industrial world (shipping containers) and the agricultural world (fruit pallets for furniture) were used. The main advantages of this system are recycling, speed of construction, cost reduction and optimization of materials.

The project sought to solve the need to install a warehouse in a reused 40´STD maritime container (interior height 2.40 m). To take advantage of the space and give it a more versatile use, a second module was added, consisting of a reused 40'HC maritime container (interior height 2.70m) that enabled a bedroom, a common space and a bathroom.

The parallel arrangement separated by 6 meters between the two modules generates an intermediate space that is covered with a higher metallic structure (elevated roof) that covers the entirety of the 2 containers. The resulting space is transformed into a habitable solution with an articulating role between the 2 elements.

Components

Understanding the project by the parts that make it up.

  • Environment: Natural context of soft hills, protective trees and silence.
  • Container warehouse: It plays a fundamental role as a support for the intermediate space by having its entire longitudinal face closed.
  • Habitable Container: It fulfills the function of solving the need for a room and being indoors.
  • Intermediate space: Being open at both ends, it becomes a semi interior and exterior space with a multi-purpose.
  • Elevated Roof: Provides spaciousness and gives a feeling of shelter. It generates an effect of thermal regulator due to air circulation due to the height difference and for having its perimeter open. Its slope allows the use of a second level on the warehouse container.
  • Wraparound layer: The wood cladding adds warmth and harmony, breaking with the hardness of the metal. It works as a ventilated façade as it is separated from the metal cladding and ventilated at both ends.
  • Stove: It acts as a finish to the intermediate space, providing a cozy and intimate touch, integrating the landscape with the construction.

2 Story L-Shaped Shipping Container Office Building, Mexico

Area: 85 m²
Containers: 2
Year: 2016
Location: Mexico City, Mexico
Photographs: Luis Gordoa
Suppliers: Comex, Interceramic, MACERE México
Other Participants: Alexa Mauleón

Description by project team

The project is 2 story L-shaped shipping container office building and includes the sales offices for a real estate development, for this, only a part of the land of approximately 250 m² was used, on the corner formed by Carlos B. Zetina and Benjamín Franklin streets, in Colonia Condesa.

The solution consisted of reusing two shipping containers which were placed one on top of the other perpendicularly. This solution allowed to generate a large terrace on the roof of the lower container and an exhibition room or glass box that results in the vacuum under the upper container and the ground floor.

One of the most important aspects of the project are the common and open spaces that function as a small-scale central plaza, allowing for a more friendly relationship between interior and exterior. The plaza also functions as a public space or waiting room where prospective buyers can wait to be served by sales staff.

In the lower container is the sales area and the exhibition room or glass box in which the model of the project is shown, in the upper one there is a meeting room and the main terrace, both containers communicate through an exterior staircase.

It was decided to keep the original wooden floors in each container, except for the main terrace and the glass box, in which a paste floor was used, in the same way and to maintain the industrial language of the project and inside you can see the old and rusty original structure of the upper container.

Description by architects

This site is located in Torigoe which is between Asakusa and Akihabara. Here is the center of the old city; there are many small factories for leather, paper craft, and ornament products. The client wanted a small office for himself and a small gallery for his wife.

We imagine that second hand containers can be put in this area, thinking that a used container could be installed among these small factories.

The direction of the doors was carefully planned and we and stacked two 40 ft containers. The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) shipping containers that circulate widely in the world cannot be used as the main structure; Because the Japanese Construction Standards Law requires JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) materials for the structure.

Therefore, like for other non-art spaces and temporary shelter for disasters, the architects chose the container house with a steel exterior frame to support the containers. This solution conforms to JIS within the Japanese Building Standards Law .

In this project, to save the appearance of the shipping container, a wooden frame has been built inside, and the surface of the shipping container was treated as facade, and wood as an inside structure.

The architectural project of the 2x20 ft  shipping container house with roof deck is based on the conception of an industrialized modular construction, with two monolithic volumes, each of the two shipping containers with 20 feet joined in parallel, with a total of 34m² of area in each set. Starting from the concept of Tiny House, within the culture that combines detachment, sustainability, less generation of waste and curb exacerbated consumerism, the containers follow the idea of mini homes, where guest has all the comforts and technology in a small space.

In the conception of this project, considering the use of ecological materials, saving natural resources, reducing construction time and preserving the natural profile of the land, it was decided to use shipping containers as the main element of the project. Additionally, reducing construction resources like water, sand, gravel, cement, brick, and iron means saving natural resources, leaving the construction site clean, and not generating waste. Considerable savings were made in the cost of the foundations and their impact on the terrain profile, since the lightweight metal frame allowed the use of small, insulated shoes without the need for reinforcement.

Compact kitchen with refrigerator, stovetop, electric oven, coffee maker, and other appliances alongside natural wood dining table with locksmith legs, is integrated into living room. Thinking about the cold of the city, the wood-burning fireplace creates an atmosphere of warmth. In addition, air conditioning and a gas heater increase the comfort.

The premises of the shipping container house with roof deck were the conception of a refuge where guests could enjoy the best view of the nearby landscape, so that large openings in strategic places create frames in the landscape. The large glazed space opens onto the porch, a breakthrough in the structure created with the doors of the original container and a precast concrete deck. These windows received horizontal blinds, which work as brises by regulating the entry of natural light. Artificial lighting was developed through metal cable trays with LED spotlights and lamps, creating stage effects and highlighting rustic brick wallpaper and natural wood carvings on the walls.

As the roof of the containers was evident, a layer of expanded polyurethane was applied on top, to waterproof and guarantee thermal and acoustic comfort. It also received a 10 cm concrete layer and finally synthetic grass, thus creating a terrace that can be accessed by a sailor's ladder. The main access is indented and is made through the door of the original container. The project was developed for Airbnb, and with aware of the constant changes in places of interest and tourism, the shipping container house with roof deck can be quickly moved to another place.
